  H1N1 Flu Information

It is important that we take H1N1 flu (formerly called swine flu) seriously and do what we can to stop its spread. Both the H1N1 and seasonal flu can spread easily from person to person. Please join the Health Department and the school district in taking steps to reduce the spread of both types of influenza, provide a safe and healthy environment and keep the schools open.

To help keep yourself and family from getting sick, you can follow “The Three Cs”:

  • Clean Your Hands: Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.

  • Cover Your Cough: Teach your childrento cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues or by using an elbow, arm or sleeve when one isn’t handy. Teach them not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.

  • Contain Illness: Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (temperature of 100 degrees or more) or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs such as Tylenol, Advil and Motrin. Keeping children at home will help them get better faster and, at the same time, help stop the spread of the virus. Please do not send children to school if they are sick.

The Kane County Health Department recommends that children get their flu shots. If you have any questions regarding the H1N1 flu, seasonal flu or the flu ‘shots,’ be sure and talk to your doctor or the Kane County Health Department. More information is available now at the Health Department’s Web site at www.kanehealth.com.

H1N1 flu no longer a reportable disease.
The Kane County Health Department will no longer notify schools when students are identified as having positive H1N1 test results, because confirmation of an influenza infection does not necessitate any different response or intervention measure by schools. For this reason, schools will not be notifying parents regarding students with H1N1 (suspected or confirmed). See the attached explanation from the Kane County Health Department.
