West Aurora High School is holding three important events this winter for members of next fall’s incoming freshman class.

·         At 6 p.m. on Dec. 1, West High will provide important curriculum information to perspective freshmen and parents from public, private and parochial schools. These course offering descriptions will help in the selection of freshman-year electives at registration. Babysitting will be available at 5:45 p.m.

·         On March 9, West High hosts Freshman Orientation Night, which provides incoming freshmen with information on school activities. Students must be accompanied by their parents. The evening begins with a spaghetti dinner and school tours hosted by the A+ Foundation for West Aurora Schools. At 6:45 p.m. perspective students learn about athletic teams, academic clubs and performing arts groups, while parents are introduced to the booster club opportunities and the Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO).

Kane Cancels Free Flu-Shot Clinics; Now Requires Appointments
The Kane County Health Department has canceled its scheduled Monday clinics due to the lack of vaccine. Because of the on-going nationwide vaccineshortage, the health department is not expecting to receive any shipments large enough in the foreseeable future to conduct the Community Clinics scheduled for Nov. 2 and Nov. 9.

In order to accommodate those who need the vaccine the most, the Health Department has established an appointment system for dispensing limited numbers of vaccinations. Kane County residents who fall into one of the priority groups can call the Appointment Line at  (630) 444-3189 to schedule appointments for H1N1 vaccinations:

·         pregnant women,

·         persons who live with or provide care for infants aged <6 months (e.g., parents, siblings, and daycare providers),

·         health-care and emergency medical services personnel

·         persons aged 6 months--24 years

·         persons aged 25--64 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.

Vaccinations will be given at Health Department's offices, 1330 N. Highland Ave. in Aurora and 113 Grove Ave. in Elgin clinic locations on Mondays and Thursdays. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. We believe there will be adequate vaccine for all those in priority groups, but it will take time. We appreciate your patience.

Executive Director

Kane County Health Department

Operation Snowflake Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary (Revised)

Operation Snowflake is an ongoing program based on the belief that every child has the ability to make positive, healthy decisions about their lives if they are given up to date factual information and allowed to develop the skills that are necessary to help them understand themselves and the world around them.

Through the presentation of accurate information about the causes and consequences of drug use, young people can know the truth about these chemicals. Scare tactics aren’t necessary because the facts are scary enough. Information alone, however, is not enough. The development of skills in the areas of problem solving, decision-making, communication, assertiveness, and positive self-concept is an essential component to preventing the use of drugs. In addition, alternative ways to feel good, to have fun, and to cope with life’s problems are important to know.

On April 16th & April 17th  Gary D. Jewel Middle School will be hosting its 10th Annual Operation Snowflake. Workshops that will be presented to the participants are: Anger Management, Teen Talk, Gang Awareness and Drugs/Alcohol.  Download the form here.

The event will be a lock-in, meaning that the program will begin on April 16th at 5:00 pm and continue until April 17th at 2:00 pm, no one will be allowed to leave the facility until the conclusion of the event on April 17th. Each participant will receive a t-shirt, snacks during the event and breakfast/lunch catered. Cost of each participant is $20.00.

Resource Officer, at 301-5333 or e-mail
