SMITH SCHOOL PROJECT: A 21st CENTURY CLASSROOM

On Feb. 17, Smith School staff members, along with parent volunteer Susan Manning and fifth grade students, participated in the 2006 Illinois Online Conference. During the first session, INTEGRATION at the ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL, staff members presented a variety of ways in which they are integrating technology to address concerns such as managing parent expectations and enhancing participation, improving student literacy, preparing students for statewide exams and connecting traditional curriculum with innovative instructional strategies through the use of technology.

The second session, The SMITH SCHOOL PROJECT: A 21st CENTURY CLASSROOM, focused on the design and implementation of a technology-integrated classroom and lab. The discussion included the change in student motivation, self directed learning and new pedagogies for working with at promise students.

Panel members included parent volunteer Susan Manning; LMC director Teresa Baumert; Principal Kathleen DeTolve; and classroom teachers Renee Dyche, Haylee Kalkman, Maria Lopez, Colleen Gawlik and student teacher Dana Herbert.

Jefferson Saunders, Catalina Campos, and Erendira Franco shared a students perspective of being involved in a tech-integrated classroom.
