FOUR ENTER WEST HIGH SPORTS HALL OF FAME


Left, newly inducted to the West Aurora High School sports hall of fame on Feb. 17 are Jim Oros 76, former wrestling coach George Dyche (whose wife, Renee, stood in for him at the ceremony) and Melinda Spearman 90.  Above, West High cheerleaders escort new sports hall of fame inductee Paul Pridmore 90 during the ceremony on Feb. 18. Pridmore is the Blackhawks first state tennis champion.

 

 Oros was on three state-qualifying teams in one year golf, basketball and baseball. Dyche coached West wrestlers from 1972-05 and is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Spearman still holds Wests career basketball scoring record (both boys and girls).

The induction of new members to the West Aurora Sports Hall of Fame was an occasion for past hall of fame members to gather. Standing are Neal Ormond 58, Jerry Ellis 49, Bill Pfeiffer 65, Joe Michels 76, Jack Albright 63, Jim Marshall 68, Mickey Ewing 40, former coach John Bell, Dick Wyatt 48, Dave Bilstrom 78 and former coach Mark Proctor. Seated are Ron Smith 52, Renee Dyche sitting in for husband and former coach George, new inductee Melinda Spearman 90 and new inductee John Oros 76.

 


HOPE WALL HOLDS SPECIAL OLYMPICS COMPETITION

Hope D. Wall School, which educates children with severe and profound disabilities from Districts 129 and 131, held a Special Olympics event called motor activities on Feb. 16.
Motor activities are for students who are unable to participate in swimming, track or golf.




17 AT WEST EARN BLACKHAWK PRIDE AWARDS

Seventeen students from West Aurora High School received Blackhawk Pride awards on Feb. 9 for best reflecting one of the three points of the high schools educational mission.

The awards went to students who:

  • show a desire to develop skills for life-long learning,

  • display a sense of global consciousness, and

  • develop in themselves or others a sense of self-worth.

February award winners are: Brisilda Bala, Ikea Bowen, Heather Brinkman, Riante Dunn, Mario Elias, Allyson Jackman, Sarah Kilroy, Kevin Lash, Adina Mann, Rachel Newman, Sarah O'Carroll, Erik Paxton, Andy Peters, Carolina Quezada, Pearl Schappat, Robyn Towle and A.J. Vize.

Award winners are nominated by West High staff members.
