Freeman Elementary School was built in 1928, added onto in 1951, and renovated in 1976 and 2003. Freeman’s 600 + students, Kindergarten through Fifth grade, are housed on two campuses. Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th attend at the original building. Fourth graders attend school at our Partnership School, one block south at Aurora University. This partnership with Aurora University began in 1996 and is designed to enhance the education of Freeman students and Aurora University students who are preparing to be teachers.
Freeman’s students come from a variety of backgrounds and neighborhoods, including the immediate surrounding area, a government subsidized housing project, and several newer subdivisions on the far west side of Aurora. Currently seven busses transport students daily. A hot lunch program is available to students at both campuses. A large playground, developed over the past few years by our PTA, as well as a large grassy play area, is enjoyed by students daily. Freeman has a large, dedicated professional staff to meet the needs of today’s students. They include 23 classroom teachers, 2 Learning Disabilities teachers, a Library Media Center teacher, specialists (Art, Music, Physical Education, Social Work, Speech/Language, Psychologist, and Band), classroom paraprofessionals and a health assistant. With well-behaved, high achieving students, an excellent teaching staff, involved and supportive parents.
Freeman students perform at high levels on standardized and state mandated tests. They are the leaders in the district in academics, sports, and the performing arts. Current initiatives to implement our School Improvement Plan included a continued focus on improving reading achievement of all students. Additional areas of concentration include the differentiation of instruction, integration of technology and the implementation of Character Counts and Peaceful Schools programs. |
