Our voting celebration was held Friday, February 20th. Forty-six students earned invitations to a breakfast and voted for their favorite titles. Alabama Moon by Watt Key received the most votes with The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan in second place. Only eight books received no votes.
It was great to have a few staff members participate as well. The faculty vote also declared Alabama Moon the winner.
Our student votes have been sent to the Illinois committee and the statewide winner will be announced in March.

Each year students have the opportunity to participate in voting for an outstanding book to receive the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award.
So who is Rebecca Caudill? Rebecca Caudill was born in Kentucky on February 2, 1899. As a writer of children's books, she often wrote about her childhood in Kentucky. Books by Rebecca Caudill include Barrie and Daughter, Tree of Freedom, and School House in the Woods. Rebecca Caudill died on October 2, 1985. She was a longtime resident of Urbana, Illinois. In 1987, the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award was established to honor her.
This award is unique because the winning book is selected by students. Each February children in grades four through eight vote for their favorite book from a list which has been selected by a nominating committee. The prerequisite to voting is that the student must have read, or have had read to him/her, at least three of the titles on the list. For more more information about this award and the nominees, visit http://www.rebeccacaudill.org/.

In the Spring the LMC will host a Scholastic Book Fair. It will feature a wide selection of hardcover and softcover books, including many great gift ideas. Sounds like a commercial, doesn't it? It is. This fair is also the major fundraiser for the LMC. On behalf of our Herget Middle School students, I would like to thank all of the people who support our students by making purchases at the annual book fair. Our profits are used to purchase new books, replace worn out books, and purchase other materials for Herget's school library.
