You are welcome in the Library at any time. But there are some things you should know...
PASSES:
Before school and during the school day, you must have a pass to use the Library. If you need to use the Library after school, you do NOT need a pass. There is a staff member in the Library until around 4 p.m., and sometimes later than that.
Before-school passes are issued by Mrs. Graves or Miss Dean ONLY! Come to the Library the day before you need to visit, and we will give you a pass for the next morning if we can (sometimes there are early-morning meetings in the Library, and the Library is closed to students).
If you need to use the Jefferson LMC during the school day, you must have a hall pass from your classroom teacher. Students without hall passes will be sent back to class.
CHECKING OUT BOOKS:
You must have your current Jefferson Middle School ID to check out library materials. If your ID is lost, you will have to replace it. New IDs cost $5, and can be ordered in the front office during lunch only. If you lose your lanyard, a replacement costs $1. However, you are not required to use a school lanyard; you may use any lanyard you choose, but you must wear your ID around your neck on a lanyard.
Normally, you may have up to three (3) library items checked out at one time. If you have library fines, see below.
Books may be checked out for 2 weeks, and may be renewed for an additional 2 weeks (if no one else is waiting for that book).
The most recent issue of a magazine may not be checked out, but older issues may be checked out for 2 days. Magazines may not be renewed.
SOME reference books may be checked out overnight. Ask Mrs. Graves or Miss Dean if you need to borrow a reference book (we can't let you to check out certain things). Reference books are due back in the Library before school the day after you check them out. Reference books may not be renewed.
If you check out a library book for a friend, YOU are still responsible for it! So think carefully before you borrow a library book for someone else.
LIBRARY FINES:
If library materials are overdue, you will have to pay a fine. Overdue fines are 5 cents per day for library books or magazines, and 25 cents per day for reference books. We only charge fines for school days (not weekends or holidays). If you are not in school when your book is due, return it as soon as you get back. You do not have to pay a fine for the days you were absent. But please tell us you were absent, so we know not to charge a fine for the days you were out of school.
If you have an overdue library book, return it as soon as you can. Once the book is returned, the fine stops growing -- the sooner you return the book, the less the fine. If a book is lost or damaged, you must reimburse the library for the cost of the book, so please be careful with your library books!
Students with library fines of 50 cents or less may have ONE (1) item checked out. Students with fines of more than 50 cents will NOT be allowed to check out library materials.
INTERNET USAGE:
Internet usage at Jefferson Middle School is limited to school-related projects. Students are NOT permitted to use email, chat or use instant messenging software, or download music or software. If you have questions, first check your school planner for information about computer usage in District 129 schools. If you still have questions, please come to the Library and ask.
