jewel middle school LMC HOW DO I ...?

Want to know how to do something?  You can access these tutorials at any time!

COMPUTERS AND PRINTING

Can I print a paper from home on the LMC computers?

Yes, but be warned: it doesn't always work.  These are some things that you need to know about printing files:

  • Always sign up for a computer before printing.
  • Always ask permission before trying to print, so that the LMC staff can approve your print job.
  • Word processing: Before you save your file at home, you need to make sure that your file is saved in .doc format or in Rich Text .rtf format.  This PDF tells you what you need to do. The LMC uses IBM-compatible PC computers and Microsoft Word software, and may not be able to open your file if you use a different software program such as Microsoft Works or WordPerfect.

USING THE CATALOG AND LOCATING BOOKS

How do I use the InfoCentre Catalog?

We have created a few PowerPoint tutorials for using InfoCentre.  You may have to "allow blocked content" to be able to download and display the files, but please rest assured that they are safe to view.

[These files are currently down-- they will be up later in the year. Sorry!]

HOLDS, RESERVES, AND INTERLIBRARY LOANS

What is the difference between putting a book on hold, putting a book on reserve, and putting in an interlibrary loan request?

  • on hold: the book or audiobook is available, but you are unable to check it out right away for some reason.
  • on reserve: we own the book, but it is not currently available because someone else has it checked out.
  • interlibrary loan: we do not own the book, but we might be able to borrow the book from another District 129 school library or from another library in the state of Illinois.

How do I put a book on hold?

To put a book or audiobook on hold, take it to the checkout desk and ask to put it on hold. We will put your name on the book and put it on a cart behind our desk.  We will hold that book for you for two school days.  If you do not claim it by that time, we will reshelve it.

How do I put a book on reserve?

You can reserve a book in person at the circulation desk, or you can do so by using our InfoCentre Book Catalog.

  • To reserve a book in person, go to the circulation desk and show your school ID.  Tell the person at the desk that you want to put a book on reserve.  Give the person the title of the book.  That person will put the book on reserve for you.
  • You may also reserve a book by using our InfoCentre Book Catalog.  See the tutorial in the "Using the Catalog" section above.

When the book is returned to the LMC, we will set it aside for you.  We will send you a blue "Your Book Is In!" notice via your REACH teacher or via your English/Language Arts teacher.  Once the notice has been sent, you will have one week to pick up your book.  If you do not claim your book by the date listed on the reserve notice, we will reshelve it (or give it to the next person on the reserve list, if others also are waiting for it).

Can I borrow a book from another library? How do I request a book through interlibrary loan?

Yes, you can borrow books from other libraries! Usually, we will first see if one of our District 129 library media centers has a copy of a book. If a copy is not available in the district, we will usually encourage you to get a copy from one of your local libraries. If there are no copies held by your local library, we will see if we can borrow a copy of the book from another public library in the state of Illinois.

How do you request a book? It's simple!  Just fill out an ILL Request Form!  You may want to read a copy of the form so you know more about the Jewel LMC's current ILL policies.  [ILL Request PDF]

You can get an ILL Request Form at the LMC circulation desk, you can print out one from the link above, or you can send an email to khahn@mail.sd129.org and make the request that way.  If you choose to make the request via email, please make the subject line Jewel LMC ILL request [your name], provide all of the requested information, and be sure to include the statement "I understand and agree to all of the ILL policies," followed by your full name.

We can't guarantee that we'll be able to fill your request, but we'll do what we can.
