CIRCULATION POLICIES
Passes: You must have a signed pass from a teacher, or be accompanied by a staff member, to use the LMC during school hours.
ID Cards: You must have your ID card with you in order to check out books and/or use the computers for research or typing. If you do not have your ID card, the library staff reserve the right to send you back to class immediately. If you lose your ID card, you need to purchase a replacement as soon as possible. The LMC can make replacement ID cards for a fee. (We also sell lanyards!)
Items: Students usually may have three items checked out at any given time. These are the basic circulation policies:

Holds, Reserves, and ILLs: Students may put an item on hold, put an item on reserve, or request a book from interlibrary loan. Putting an item on hold is done when the LMC has the item available, but you are unable to check out the item for some reason. Putting an item on reserve is done when the item is owned by the LMC, but the item is not currently available. Putting in an interlibrary loan request for a book is done when the LMC does not own the book. The LMC staff will see if we can borrow the book from another District 129 school library or from a public library in Illinois.
FINES, OVERDUES, AND LOST MATERIALS
Fines and Overdues: Students will be charged five cents per day, per item, for every school day that library materials are late. You must return overdue items, and pay all fines in full, before you may check out new items.
Lost Materials: If you lose any materials, you will need to pay for the full cost of those materials. Please tell us immediately if you believe you lost an item, so we can set up a payment plan. The LMC can accept cash and checks (made out to Jewel Middle School). You do not have to pay the entire amount at once! If you can only pay off a little bit, pay what you can until you have paid the entire cost.
COMPUTERS AND INTERNET USE
Before using a computer for typing, research, or Internet use, you must sign up for a computer at the circulation desk.
Acceptable use: You may use the school computers and Internet network connections only for class projects, research assignments, and educational purposes.
Checking your email: Students usually will not have access to their personal email accounts at school. If necessary, the LMC staff will help you to email an article or web page to your personal email account, or help you download a project from your personal email account.
Surfing the Internet: If you choose to visit Internet sites that have nothing to do with school projects or class assignments, the LMC staff will choose to send you back to class. You may also be written up, sent to the dean's office, and/or prevented from using the LMC during school hours, depending on the frequency and severity of the situation.
Printing: Usually, you will need to take notes on anything you read on the Internet. However, with permission, you may be able to print out one or two pages of clip-art images, or the final copy of a paper for a class assignment. You must ask permission before printing any material from any LMC computer.
Typing: You may use the LMC computers to type papers or create projects for class assignments. Please bring your own floppy disk or USB drive on which you can save your files. You may be able to borrow a floppy disk from the LMC, or temprarily check out a USB drive, if you are unable to obtain your own disk to save files.
Printing papers you typed at home: If you want to use the LMC to print something you typed at home (or at a friend's house, or at the public library), you will need to save your file in .doc format or in Rich Text .rtf format. You will need to save your files in the .doc (Microsoft Word 97-2003) format, the .docx (Microsoft Word 2007) format, or the .rtf (Rich Text) format when you save your file at home. This file tells you what you need to do. The LMC computers will not be able to open documents in any other formats.
