Parents invited to learn about new science curriculum Sept. 23
Parents of students at all West Aurora District 129 elementary schools are invited to learn more about the district’s new science curriculum.

The event will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the West High School cafeteria, and it is for parents of pre-K to fifth-graders in all 12 elementary schools. There will be bilingual support for Spanish-speaking parents.

The curriculum, known as the Pearson Science Program, relies heavily on computer-based text, pictures and videos. At the event, there will be hands-on stations so parents can get a feel for the scope and sequence of what kids are learning each year.

“This is important to pull the parents together, let them do some hands-on activities and share what the program is all about,” said Ann Butcher, the district’s K-12 science curriculum specialist.

The district is partnering with SciTech, and the Aurora museum will offer a grand prize for free family membership as well as coupons for families.

This curriculum is “much more in depth” than the previous science program, said Ann Butcher, the district’s K-12 science curriculum specialist. “You can see videos of events taking place, all the assessment is on line and books are on line. There are a lot more resources and support for parents, teachers and students.”
