EXPLANATION OF SCOPE AND SEQUENCE:
A scope and sequence is a vital whole school / district design that allows educators to plan for individual learning sequences for students within our lead. A scope and sequence is used as an additional resource or road map to help school divisions develop curricula aligned to the Illinois State Standards, Descriptors, as well as District 129 Priority Learning Targets (PLTs). The scope and sequence provides guidance on how the essential understandings, knowledge, skills, and processes that are identified in the Illinois State Standards, the Standards of Learning Teacher Resource Guides, or the Curriculum Framework may be introduced to students in a logical, sequential, and meaningful manner.
The scope and sequence documents are intended to serve as general guides to help teachers and curriculum developers align their curricula and instruction to support the Illinois Learning Standards. The information is organized around specific topics to help teachers’ present information in an organized, articulated manner. The scope and sequence is not intended to prescribe how curriculum should be developed or how instruction should be delivered. Instead, they provide examples showing how teachers and school divisions present the sequence of learning to students in a logical and effective manner; information that has been aligned with the Priority Learning Targets (PLTs) and Illinois State Standards. Teachers correlate the content identified in the scope and sequence with available instructional resources and develop lesson plans to support instruction. Also included are correlations to the District 129’s Priority Learning Targets (which derive from the Illinois State Learning Standards) for Science for each grade level, as well as ideas for classroom assessments and teaching resources. The Scope and Sequence and Curricula are linked together to provide the time, tools and training that when facilitated in conjunction with each other, provide for strong instruction. |
