NICHOLSON STUDENT WINS DISTRICT-WIDE SPEECH CONTEST

Andres Arellanes, a Nicholson Elementary School student, won first place Monday, May 1 at the district speech contest held at Greenman Elementary School.

Fifth-graders from 11 Dist. 129 elementary schools participated. These students had already won their own schools’ speech contests. This year’s topic was ”My State.” Modern Woodmen of America sponsored the contests.

Arellanes won a cash award and a trophy. His school also received a trophy.

Second-place winner Matt Michels of Freeman Elementary School and third-place winner Lauren Carlini of Smith Elementary School also received trophies.

First- and second-place winners of the district contests are invited to participate in the regional-level School Speech Contest in Rock Island. Modern Woodmen is a financial services company.
