WEST HIGH JUNIOR TO BECOME FIRST STUDENT ON SCHOOL BOARD

West Aurora High School junior Kathryn Hunger will be appointed to the Dist. 129 School Board on June 5 and will serve through next school year.

Hunger is the first student to join the board. The state legislature last year passed a law allowing students to sit on school boards in an advisory capacity.

A National Honor Society member, Hunger competed for the position by writing an essay, collecting petition signatures and gaining letters of endorsements from teachers.

In her essay, Hunger states, “I aspire to be this liaison between the Board and the student body. I would like to inspire students to take a proactive stand in their education.”

West High English teacher Nicole Fraser wrote in her letter endorsing Hunger, “In my three years of teaching, I have never met a student more dedicated to school and extracurricular activities than Kate.”

Hunger is participating this year in softball, pep band and marching band, as well as serving as a mentor and Student Ambassador. She is also a member of the speech team, mathletes and Scholastic Bowl.

This will not be the first time Hunger has worked alongside adults. She was on the interview board for the new West High athletic director and on the planning committee for the construction of Herget Middle School.
