For the twenty-first consecutive
year, a service project by Jefferson Middle School band students will
bring together young and old for a morning of music and food.
The Jefferson Senior Citizen Breakfast and Band Concert will be held at
9:15 a.m., Friday, April 21 at the school, 1151 Plum St., Aurora.
Seniors and retirees can reserve seats by calling 301-5009. Last year
the band played to an audience of approximately 275.
The service project actually begins in February when the sixth-grade
band students send out the invitations with valentines to about 300
senior citizens. Invitations are also sent to churches, clubs, and other
organizations.
Meanwhile, the seventh- and eighth-band students prepare a special
musical program for this event.
Sixth-grade band students also compete to be greeters and workers.
Approximately 25 are chosen based on an essay, behavior, and
citizenship.
Finally, P.T.A mothers (band moms) help with decorating, food
preparation and serving.
“Through this project, the students learn to value senior citizens and
treat them with respect,” says Band Director Lila Fagan. “The
interaction between the students and seniors during the breakfast is
amazing.”
The band-and-breakfast project is funded by a grant from The Foundation
for West Aurora Schools
