JEWEL MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH-A-THON BENEFITS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

The recent Jewel Middle School Math-A-Thon netted $6,142 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Sixty-five students participated in the annual event, which has been coordinated by Jewel teacher Kay Peters for the past seven years. In those years, students have collected nearly $46,000. The funds will be used by St. Jude’s in its ongoing fight against childhood catastrophic diseases such as cancer, AIDS and sickle cell anemia.

Math-A-Thon students obtain sponsorships and then complete problems in the Math-A-Thon fun book. Sponsors donate to St. Jude’s for each problem their students answer correctly.

In the past three years, one student stands out from all the rest, says Peters. Jazzlyn Luckett has collected more than $3,000 while in middle school. Luckett also is the top fundraising student for the Jewel band program.
