WEST HIGH STUDENT WINS AWARD IN STATE JOURNALISM CONTEST

Aurora High School junior Ariel Johnson took home the sixth-place award in yearbook theme development at the IHSA Journalism state competition April 29 at Eastern Illinois University.

In its inaugural year, the IHSA competition presented awards to the six highest scoring participants as state winners. Johnson and her 23 competitors all had qualified through regional competition. In the state finals, they were given 90 minutes to design a yearbook cover, theme page and connections to divisional pages (sports, people and events) from a prompt given to them by the contest judges.

Two other West yearbook students also competed in the state finals. Jessica Lobdell took ninth in the state in feature writing, and Orion Deligiannis took seventh in photography.

“I am excited for Ariel,” says Kim Dirck, yearbook adviser and English teacher. “She is an honors student and a great person all around. And I am so proud of all three of them. Next year will be our year to win big.”

West Aurora High School yearbook staffers Orion Deligiannis, Jessica Lobdell and Ariel Johnson competed at state-level competition in the Illinois High School Association’s first-ever journalism competition.
