Eric Dominguez, a Freeman Elementary School fifth-grader, won first place in the Dist. 129 civic oration contest on April 24 at Greenman School.

Matthew Carder of Smith School and Dominique Ruffalo of Goodwin finished second and third. The top two now advance to state-level competition.

Each of the 11 contestants had won earlier competition at their individual elementary schools. Other contestants were: Dana Lingel, Fearn; Devonte Ward, Greenman; Patricia Lowe, Hall; Erin Larsen, Hill; Christopher Geist, Lincoln; Haydee Garcia, McCleery; Emily Zepeda, Nicholson, and Brandon Evert, Schneider.

Modern Woodmen of America sponsors the annual contest. Judging the speeches were Nicole Fraser, West Aurora High School English teacher and speech coach; Ava Smith, a West senior and speech team president, and Mike Chapin, community and alumni relations director.
