Greenman fifth-grader Ella Gonzales won the Dist. 129 Elementary School Speech Contest recently at Greenman School.
The speech topic this year was "a time a volunteer made a difference," and Gonzales spoke about Hesed House.
The second-place winner, Nicholson’s Aaliyah Alcala, spoke about Rover Rescue. The third-place winner, Hill’s JaQuan Buchanan, spoke about Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
First and second place will compete at the state competition on May 19 in Rock Island.
Other contestants were Derek Dodson, Fearn; Cesar Lopez, Freeman; Kayla Hardersen, Goodwin; Dylan Fogle, Hall; Gina Jenkins, McCleery; Sydney Becker, Schneider and Yosor Alwan, Smith.
Julie Esparza, the district Gifted and Talented Program coordinator, administered the contest.
The contest was sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America.
