The Middle School Physical Education Programs in District 129 allows the students to participate in a variety of physical education activities to the best of their ability. Through this participation the students will develop interactive skills, decision-making skills and the ability to share ideas with others. Students will develop and maintain cooperative skills and exhibit good sportsmanship through fair play. All of which will lead to the benefits of lifelong activity. Examples of activities offered include: soccer, roller-skating, golf, volleyball, aerobics, badminton, and floor hockey.
Middle school students participate in physical education five days a week for a period of twenty-seven weeks. One nine-week period each year the students' physical education experience is health studies.
6th Grade
The Grade 6 Health Education program teaches students about Personal and Social Adjustment including self esteem, controlling emotions, saying NO and goal setting. First Aid and Safety includes safety in the community and at home and violence prevention. Personal Health includes puberty changes, adolescent development and cleanliness habits. The Body systems unit includes the 9 body systems. Emphasis in all programs of study is on making responsible decisions.
7th Grade
The Grade 7 Health Education program consists of drug prevention materials emphasizing refusal skills and gateway drugs and stages of dependency. The Personal Safety concepts include sexual harassment, sexual assault prevention and domestic violence. Mental Wellness issues include stress and time management, goal setting, conflict resolution and eating disorders.
8th Grade
The Grade 8 Health Education program teaches students the in-depth anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system along with pregnancy and childbirth. Taught along with this is another unit called Healthy Choices. This unit involves discussion on developing responsible relationships, limit setting and risky behavior. An emphasis on Abstinence is focus for all 8th graders. The unit also includes a in-class project called "Living On Your Own" which stresses the financial, career and lifelong impact of a teenage pregnancy. The Disease unit includes S.T.D.'s and other communicable diseases. Students learn that as young adults they can make responsible health choices in their lives and avoid risky behaviors that can impact their future. |
