Project CRISS stands for CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies and has been a school wide initiative since 2000. Over 200 teachers have been trained on how to incorporate learning strategies into classroom instruction. These strategies help students to be actively engaged in learning by reading, writing, and discussing.
Teacher Tip:
Do not FEAR the word ‘CRISS’! Most likely, you are using CRISS strategies already; you just don’t realize that they are CRISS strategies. Any kind of table, chart, diagram, study technique, pre/during/post reading activity, etc. would fall into a CRISS category. It is a way for students to organize their thoughts and take ownership for their learning.
