Dieterle First Major Sponsor of Campaign to Bring Moving Wall Vietnam Memorial to West Aurora High School
Dieterle Memorial Home of Montgomery has contributed $5,000 toward the effort to bring The Moving Wall Vietnam Veterans Memorial to Aurora next November, the largest contribution so far.
The Moving Wall, which is a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will rise in the practice soccer fields of West Aurora High School and be on display Nov. 7 through 11. In addition, the traveling replica of the World War II memorial and 2,013 American flags will be on display during the “Field of Honor” event.
The Wall is engraved with the names of 58,282 Americans who perished in the Vietnam Conflict or are still unaccounted for (Prisoners of War and Missing in Action). More than 200,000 people are expected to visit the “Field of Honor” during the five-day event. The Moving Wall was last in Aurora 24 years ago, when more than 150,000 people came to view it.
Dieterle president Mel Payne served in Vietnam, said Randy Valentine, who is the company’s funeral director.
“The whole thing is about giving back to the veterans who have given to us to help keep us safe,” Valentine said. “The Moving Wall is a very solemn tribute to those who lost their lives while serving.”
The Aurora Moving Wall Committee, headed by Chairman Herschel Luckinbill, has set a goal to raise $50,000 to pay for displays and daily patriotic events at the site. With the contribution from Dieterle, which is located at 1120 S. Broadway, Montgomery, the committee recently passed $10,000 in total contributions. The committee has received nearly 20 donations so far. Sponsorship opportunities include the following levels:
·Admiral level ($5,000 and up)
·Captain ($3,000)
·Lieutenant ($2,000)
·NCO ($500-$1,000).
Signage opportunities vary by level of contribution.
“We want this to be the biggest event this Wall and Aurora has ever seen, and we want it to honor all veterans,” said Luckinbill. “As a Vietnam veteran, having the wall come to Aurora means everything to me. I served on the first American ship that received direct gunfire in the Vietnam War. I lost a shipmate who slept right above me. I know what war’s about.”

West Auroras Spamalot to Generate Plenty of Laughs May 2-4
Get ready to laugh when the West Aurora High School students perform “Spamalot” at 7 p.m., May 2-4, in the auditorium, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora.
The spring musical is based, in part, on the classic movie comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and features a multitude of hilarious and wacky scenes that will defy easy explanation.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at sd129tickets.org.
The play re-tells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The Monty Python movie was released in 1975 and is considered one of the all-time classic comedies. Eric Idle, an original Python member, and John Du Prez adapted Spamalot for the stage, and the original Broadway production in 2005 won three Tony Awards.
West High Drama Sponsor Ken Ruffalo, who first saw the production four years ago, obtained the rights to the play as soon as he could.
“It’s a curveball. It’s something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Ruffalo, who is a West High English teacher. “We always try to look for something new and push the talented students we have.”
This school year, West Aurora has several top female drama students, so Ruffalo and his team tweaked a few of the roles to make sure they were all involved. About 100 students are part of the show – as cast, in the orchestra or on the crew.
“My favorite thing about this play is that approximately 30 students have a speaking / singing role, so this is absolutely a group piece,” said Jen Pauley, who is an assistant along with English teacher John Proczko.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a West High play without some incredibly inventive stage scenes.
“The set is going to be no-holds-bared once again,” Ruffalo said. “We’ll have a huge water feature when the Lady of the Lake comes in” as well as a catapulted cow and a rotating stage, among other features.
“We’ve always had very strong support from the community and they’ve come to expect a lot from our productions, which is great,” Ruffalo said. “They know we hold students to very high standard. Our goal is to run a professional production. We don’t want people to walk out and say ‘That was a nice high school production.’ We want them to walk out and say ‘Wow, those are high school kids?’”

West Aurora Student Cardiac Screenings Reveal 28 with Abnormalities
Recent cardiac screenings of more than 2,000 West Aurora High School students revealed 28 with abnormalities.
To help identify those who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death, West High provided an electrocardiogram (ECG) screening to each participating student. The effort was part of the Young Hearts for Life program, which conducts tests at about 30 area high schools. PE teacher Meghan Hill organized the West Aurora screenings, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and thousands of dollars in donations.
The families of the 28 students with abnormalities were contacted with recommendations to seek further medical review, Hill said. Two years ago a similar screening turned up 18 West Aurora students with abnormalities.
Hill is motivated by a desire to help others and prevent a tragedy. She also organized the tests as a way to honor the memory of her cousin, Kathryn Bender, a high school student who died suddenly seven years ago from a heart disease called QT syndrome. She hopes to repeat the testing at West Aurora every two years.

At around 2:40 p.m., two girls, ages 5 and 10, were walking home from school in the area of Laurel Drive and Robert Street where they saw a vehicle stopped in the street. They described the car as a newer, black, Toyota Camry, with an Illinois license plate that began with the number ‘9’. As they continued to walk, the driver of the vehicle rolled down the passenger side window, and while motioning with his hand, told the 5 year old to come over to his car. The 10 year old girl told the man that neither she nor the 5 year old would come near him and they backed away.
At that point, the driver, described as a white male around 27 years old with a large build, acne on his face, a small mustache, and wearing a black shirt and black hat, pulled the vehicle closer to the curb. The girls could then see that the man was not wearing any pants. He proceeded to say a sexually explicit comment to them while touching his genitals before driving away eastbound on Robert Street.
Police are asking anyone with information to call investigators at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5000 for information that leads to any arrests.

Moving Wall Vietnam Memorial coming to West High (Revised)
AURORA, IL – It has been 24 years since The Moving Wall Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been on display in Aurora. But it’s coming back this Veterans Day through the efforts of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, Vietnam veteran Herschel Luckinbill and an army of volunteers.
The Moving Wall, which is a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will rise in the practice soccer fields of West Aurora High School and be on display Nov. 7 through 11. In addition, the traveling replica of the World War II memorial and other military displays will be on display during the “Field of Honor” event.
Luckinbill submitted an application to bring The Moving Wall to Aurora almost a year ago. He recently was notified that the Wall would be scheduled to arrive in Aurora in early November. Although he originally was aiming for a summer date, Luckinbill said he “couldn’t be happier” that The Moving Wall will be in Aurora on the holiday that honors America’s veterans.
The Wall is engraved with the names of 58,282 Americans who perished in the Vietnam Conflict or are still unaccounted for (Prisoners of War and Missing in Action).
“The entire Aurora community is extremely supportive of our troops, they demonstrate respect for our veterans and they take pride in our military,” said Dr. Rudy Keller, co-principal of West Aurora High School and a member of the committee to bring The Moving Wall to Aurora. “The Moving Wall will heighten the patriotism that already flourishes in Aurora.”
When The Moving Wall first visited Aurora 24 years ago, it was displayed on the Fox Valley Park District’s Veterans Island. Former American Legion Post 84 Commander and Army veteran Norris “Doc” Erickson, who died in 2012, was instrumental in bringing the wall to Aurora in 1989. Aurora was the only Chicago-area host of The Moving Wall that year.
Now that the 2013 dates and venue have been reserved for The Moving Wall, Luckinbill’s team is looking for both sponsors and volunteers. The cost of bringing The Moving Wall to Aurora is $30,000.
Luckinbill is estimating upward of 150,000 people will come to Aurora during the four days The Moving Wall is on display. “There will be plenty to do,” Luckinbill said. “There will be a task for every person who would like to help.” A community volunteer meeting is being planned. Those interested in volunteering for the event or being sponsors can call Luckinbill at 630-801-9591.
Like the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., The Moving Wall was paid for solely through private contributions. No tax dollars were spent on either memorial. The concept and actual building of The Moving Wall grew out of the efforts of three Vietnam veterans from California who wished to share the power that one of the men, John Devitt, experienced while attending the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982. The Moving Wall was completed in 1984.
The length of The Moving Wall is 254 feet, slightly longer than half the length of the memorial in Washington, D.C.

Greg Miller
Greg Miller is a member of the West Aurora High School Class of 1997 and was a tremendous two-sport athlete, playing varsity basketball and baseball for three years.
Greg’s varsity career on the hardwood began when he was brought up to the varsity as a sophomore in 1994 for Coach Gordie Kerkman’s 17-10 squad. At 6’5”, Greg was a very difficult matchup for opposing guards and he averaged 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. As a junior he helped lead the team to a 27-3 record and 9th place in the state by averaging 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals per game. Greg led the team is assists, steals and charges taken as a senior and compiled 524 career points and 490 career rebounds, and helped propel the Blackhawks to a second-place finish in the state with a 29-4 record in 1997. Greg was named first-team All Conference for his efforts that season.
Baseball, however, is where Greg made his biggest mark on the West Aurora sports history book. Greg is the current West Aurora record holder for career strikeouts, career innings pitched, highest single-season batting average (.480) and is tied for the most wins in a career with 23. He was a three-time All Conference baseball player, and as a senior was named Beacon News Player of the Year, Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year, Chicago Tribune First Team All State, and was selected to the USA Today High School All-American Team. West Aurora named him the Male Athlete of the Year for 1997. Soon after, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round (161st overall) of that year’s Amateur Baseball Draft.
Greg was recognized by the Boston Red Sox organization in 1998 as the Gulf Coast League Pitcher of the Year and in 1999 as the Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year. Greg was traded after the 1999 season to the Houston Astros organization where he ascended to the team’s number 7 prospect in 2001. Having reached as high as Triple A, and after some challenging arm injuries, Greg retired after six professional seasons.
He returned to the Aurora area and graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Education.
Greg was elected to the Aurora Boys’ Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009 in recognition of his spectacular career. He now resides in Riverside, IL with his wife, Leslie, and son, Michael.

Rededication of West Aurora’s Van Sickle Ford Paintings Feb. 2 (Revised)
The rededication of restored paintings by Ruth Van Sickle Ford will take place at 12:45 p.m., Feb. 2, in the West Aurora High School Library, during the school district’s Fine Arts Festival.
The West Aurora Class of ‘51 had helped fund the restoration of four paintings by Ford, a renowned artist and a 1915 West graduate who later ran the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Donations were made through the A+ Foundation for West Aurora Schools.
Ford biographer Nancy Hopp ’61, will speak at the dedication. Her book, “Warm Light, Cool Shadows,” was published last year. A video on the creation of the book, which involved a number of West alumni, can be found at aplusfoundation.org/donation.
It was the Class of ’51 that donated the paintings to the school years ago. They have been a constant reminder of West High's tradition of arts excellence and have provided a direct connection to the school’s history. Ford was inducted into West’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor in 2006.
The dedication will occur during the School Dist. 129 Fine Arts Festival, which will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at West High, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora. The free festival features music, song, dance, paintings, sculpture and other artwork from students, pre-kindergarten through high school, attending all district schools.

Five More School Dist. 129 teachers earn National Board Certification
Five more School Dist. 129 teachers recently have earned National Board certification, bringing the total number in the district to 37.
The newly certified teachers are:
• Kathy Brown, kindergarten teacher at Fearn Elementary;
• Sarah Kanive, 1st grade teacher at Fearn;
• Danielle Rios, Diversified teacher at West Aurora High School;
• Elizabeth Smith, Science teacher at West; and
• Alexandra Scott, Science teacher at West.
A certification pinning ceremony for these teachers will occur at 6 p.m., Feb. 4, in the high school library, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora, at the beginning of the School Board meeting.
Fearn LMC director Carol Wicks was the facilitator for this year’s cohort. She received assistance from West High science teacher Bob Lundquist. Both Wicks and Lundquist are National Board certified teachers.
To gain national certification, each of these teachers went through a rigorous, year-long process with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards during which they had to master the most effective teaching practices.
A recent report by Harvard’s Strategic Data Project on the nation’s second-largest school district found that, on average, National Board certified teachers in Los Angeles public schools significantly outperformed peers with the same level of experience. This confirms earlier studies, which also found that students taught by National Board certified teachers score better on achievement tests than students whose teachers are not Board certified.

Purchase Tickets Online for April 20 Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor Banquet (Revised)
The West Aurora High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor will recognize four graduates this spring who have gained recognition for outstanding accomplishments in their fields of endeavor.
The 2013 Hall inductees will be Edgar Neil Foster, Jr., 38; Robert Garrison, 54; Carol Cauldwell McElroy, 61 and Michael Oros, 80
Foster was a world-famous magician who was invited to perform at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in London. He was the editor of The New Tops, a trade journal for magicians, edited several magic books. He also operated a school of magic and invented many effects. He was world famous for his floating sphere illusion.
Garrison is an astronomer, author and educator. His primary research has involved the discovery and description of certain types of stars. He is known for his way of making the most complex of subjects -- advanced areas of the Milky Way Galaxy, analysis of the stellar contents of star clusters and galaxy nuclei, for example -- accessible for his students.
McElroy is a teacher whose classroom locations have included China, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Mauritania, Turkey, Armenia, Spain, Iceland and Costa Rica. She and her husband, Richard, go into developing countries to teach children and adults ways in which to better themselves and their communities, thereby impacting their countries as a whole. McElroy teaches English skills, of course, but her broader scope of influence has been her instruction of teachers in how they can become more effective in their classrooms.
Oros is an American Board certified and Illinois licensed prosthetist and orthotist, an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern Universitys orthotic/prosthetic program and president of an orthotics and prosthetics firm. His expertise extends beyond the borders of the United States as he and a team of associates make yearly trips to remote villages of Ecuador to fit prosthetic devices for the poor who have lost limbs and who could never afford these devices. This life-changing service is provided free of charge.
The Hall of Honor program is sponsored by the A+ Foundation of West Aurora Schools, which seeks to inspire excellence in students and staff through its support of educational, cultural and charitable programs.

West Auroras Carlini Named Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year
West Aurora High School’s Lauren Carlini has been named the 2012-13 Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year.
The senior All-American, who will be attending the University of Wisconsin next fall, was surprised during her morning economics class on Dec. 11 when Olympic Silver Medalist April Ross walked in unexpectedly to present her with the National Player of the Year trophy.
Immediately after that, the school held an assembly in the gym so Carlini could share the moment with her classmates, coaches, teachers and family.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Carlini as the nation’s best high school volleyball player. Carlini has maintained a 3.73 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally on behalf of the Geneva Police Department, the Illinois Math and Science Academy and as a youth volleyball coach.
Under West Aurora Coach Kari Nicholson, the 6-foot-1 senior recorded 333 kills, 303 assists, 156 digs, 92 service aces and 50 blocks this past season while posting a kill percentage of .594 and leading the Blackhawks (32-6) to the Class 4A sectional semifinals. The 2012 Chicago Tribune Volleyball Player of the Year and a 2012-13 American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour First Team All-American, Carlini earned MVP honors in leading the U.S. Girls Youth National Team to a gold medal at the 2011 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships. She also started for Team USA at that summer's FIVB Girls Youth World Championships in Turkey, and is the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2013 as rated by PrepVolleyball.com.
A national advisory panel comprised of sport-specific experts and sports journalists helped select Carlini from more than 400,000 high school volleyball players nationwide. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports.

Make Valentines Day More Meaningful -- Help screen Students for Heart Defects
West Aurora High School teacher Meghan Hill is looking for some heart-felt assistance from a few hundred caring individuals around Valentine’s Day. Her goal is to identify high school students who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death.
Hill is seeking 250 volunteers to help provide cardiac (EKG) screenings to 2,000 West High students over a two-day period, Feb. 14 and 15. Volunteers are needed to perform the EKGs, register students, put stickers on the students, type in student information and assist the nursing staff.
The West PE/Health teacher, whose own teen-aged cousin died suddenly from heart disease, led an effort two years ago with the Midwest Heart Foundation to test hundreds of West Aurora students. Eighteen students were found to have abnormalities and were recommended for further testing.
Volunteers next year will work in four-hour shifts at:
• Feb. 14 from 6:50-11:30 a.m.;
• Feb. 14 from 11 a.m.-3:10 p.m.;
• Feb. 15 from 6:50-11:30 a.m.; and
• Feb. 15 from 11 a.m.-3:10 p.m.
There is a mandatory training night on Feb. 13. The sessions are from 5:30-7 p.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. Returning volunteers only need to come for a five-minute refresher at the beginning of one of the sessions. Volunteers do not need to have any experience.
The Midwest Heart Foundation is a 501c3 non- profit organization, so donations are tax-deductible.

James Jim D. Pittman, West High Biology Teacher for 34 Years
James “Jim” D. Pittman
June 5, 1930 - December 2, 2012
James “Jim” D. Pittman, of Aurora passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday December 2, 2012. His heroic battle with cancer caught all of us unaware, even him. When we discovered what was wrong it was too late, and he was gone in a month. He is now, perhaps playing golf in heaven with Ray Thill.
Jim was born June 5, 1930 in Aurora, the son of the late Herman and Ellen (Roots) Pittman. He attended Bardwell Elementary School, Immanuel Grade School and East Aurora High School. He earned letters in track and football and some fame with his quickness and speed. He attended Indiana State University and later transferred to Aurora College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He spent two years in the U.S. Army at Ft. Sill, O.K.
Upon his returning to Aurora he began teaching at Benjamin Franklin Junior High. His motto in teaching was “don’t smile until after the first month of school." which undoubtedly earned him the title of "Sarge." After teaching Junior High, he moved to West Aurora High School, where he taught Biology for 34 years. He coached golf for several years, taking them downstate several times. He also coached sophomore basketball for many years. During his teaching career he gained his Masters of Education at University of Illinois. Here is his picture from the 1962 EOS yearbook:
He retired in 1992 and entered the “golden years” of retirement. He "worked" part time as a Starter and Marshall at Orchard Valley Golf Course for 20 years. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Golden Kiwanis and National Education Association. He also volunteered as a “Helping Hand” at Dryer Medical Center. His special delights were his family and his love of travel. During these years he traveled quite extensively. The highlight of his travels was playing golf at the old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.
He is survived by his wife, Doris (Kettelson) Pittman of 60 years; his four children, Craig (Jan) Pittman, Kristi Hoffmann, Scott (Kim) Pittman and Kim (Tom) Thill. His nine grandchildren, Kyle and Bryan Pittman, Jake, Gavin (Tiffany), CJ Hayes, and Andrew Hoffman, Noelle Pittman, Samuel and Jack Thill; and one great granddaughter, Eva Lynn Hayes. He is also survived by his sister, Marijo (William) Spick, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday 1-4 p.m. December 9, 2012 at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Pl. Aurora. Funeral services will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. December 10, 2012 at St. Olaf Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1233 Douglas Rd. Montgomery, IL. Interment will be private at Platteville Lutheran Cemetery.

8th Grade Curriculum Night
We are very excited to welcome your student as one of the newest members of the Blackhawk community and look forward to working closely with you and your student to make his/her experience at West High as fulfilling as possible.
Attached you will find the power point and handouts that we delivered at the eighth grade parent curriculum night on 11/28/12. Please preview the power point first and then read through the brochures that outline all of the possibilities and programs that your student can be involved in during his/her time at West High.
During the next several months your student’s eighth grade teachers and the West High department chairmen will examine your student’s EXPLORE and CoGAT scores that each student took in October of this year, to determine placement in your student’s freshman math, science, social science and English classes. Through the scores and conversations between the middle school teachers and the high school department chairmen, a final placement in each of these classes will be determined for your student.
We need your assistance in beginning the conversation about where your student expects to be in eight years and setting your student’s goals for high school and college. It is imperative that this conversation and mapping of courses begins today prior to your student finalizing his/her freshman registration in February. By following the guidelines in the power point, you will be able to plot a successful course of learning for your student. With the end in sight, we have attached our Dual Credit booklet and our academic honors booklet so that you can push your student to accomplish more than just a high school education during his/her four years at West High. With your support and guidance and our instruction, we can collaborate and assist your student in reaching his/her utmost potential.

West Aurora Alumni Create Holiday Music CD
Choral group “Ancora imparo,” made up of eight former members of the West Aurora High School A Cappella Choir, has created a holiday music CD under the direction of former West music director Meg Papadolias.
Entitled “Some of My Best Friends … Songs for the Winter Season,” the $15 CD is available at Pockets Restaurants, Kiss the Sky in Batavia, Aurora Aglow: a Popup Emporium at the David Pierce Arts Center in Aurora, the School Dist. 129 administration office and from any member of the musical group. Profits will go to the A+ Foundation’s Meg Papadolias Endowment Fund, which supports the district’s choral music programs.
The music is performed in a variety of styles, from traditional Christmas music, such as “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night” and “Carol of the Bells,” to an original by Papadolias, “Something Told the Wild Geese.”
“All of the tracks are arranged differently than you have heard them before,” Papadolias said. “Because all of the voices are treble, and because instruments used include lever harp and hammer dulcimer, I would say that if you like the sound of the Celtic Women recordings, you will like this recording.”
Members of Ancora imparo on the recording are Emily Fuller, Annie Carpenter, Jennette Birch, Lisa McConkey, Stephanie Voirin Leo, Elise Hankins Clever, Sharon Head Thierfelder and Heather Fairbanks Lambert. The group now includes Alexondrea Koester, a 2012 West graduate.
Guest soloists who joined in the recording are Marjorie Klespitz and Becca Caliendo, who both have masters degrees in vocal performance and are singing in opera now; Nora (Jessica) Navarro, who will graduate in musical theater from Roosevelt this year; Laura Thurlwell; Kim Scharf, who teaches general music at Greenman; Bob Lisberg, restaurant entrepreneur and musician; and Allison Zabelin, who is an orchestra director in the Libertyville School District.
The album was recorded by K Lamont Lambert, music teacher at Jewel Middle School. It was mastered by Dustin Fairbanks. Papadolias’ sons, John and Adam, also play on the album, guitar and sitar respectively.
Tracks include:
1.Star in the East (Early American Carol)
2.Something Told the Wild Geese
3.Carol of the Bells
4.Carol of the Birds (Catalonian Carol)
5.Westminster Carol
6.How Far Is It to Bethlehem (soprano duet with lever harp)
7.Mi shebeirach (Jewish folk with violin obligato)
8.O Holy Night (soprano duet)
9.Away in a Manger/Gift Carol (lever harp solo)
10.We Three Kings (way different arrangement with sitar)
11.Joys Seven (Early American Carol)
12.Little Lamb (with hammer dulcimer)
13.A la nanita nana (mariachi-like treatment of Spanish carol…with guitars and violins)
14.In the Bleak Midwinter (the Darke arrangement, not the Holst)
15.Silent Night

Children of recently arrived refugees and immigrants from the far corners of the globe, who speak more than 30 different languages, now attend Dist. 129 schools.
The food from two of two of those communities, Bhutan and Burma, will be featured at the opening reception for a mini-exhibit of the impact of 21st-century immigration on Aurora’s history called Flavors of Aurora: Stirred Not Shaken: World. The free event is from 5-8 p.m., Nov. 2 at the Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place, Aurora. In addition to the ethnic food, there will be a tea bar, authentic music and dance and an American-style cash bar.
The exhibit will be up from noon-4 p.m., Wednesdays-Saturdays, through Nov. 24. Group tours can be arranged by calling 630-906-0650.
Hailing from such countries as Nepal, Bhutan, Burma (Myanmar), other lands such as Iran and Iraq, and nations such as Eritrea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somali, Liberia, Burundi and Rwanda these new arrivals have suffered ethnic, political or religious oppression in their native lands. They are helped by the U.N. to seek peace and opportunity in any country that will welcome them with law and justice. Many come to the United States and over the last decade, thanks to sponsorship by local churches and the organization World Relief, hundreds have learned to call Aurora home.

West Aurora Drama Presents The Bad Seed Nov. 16 and 17
West Aurora High School’s drama students will present “The Bad Seed” at 7 p.m., Nov 16 and 17, in the school auditorium, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora.
Tickets for the play are $8 and can be purchased online at sd129tickets.org.
“The Bad Seed,” one of Broadway’s outstanding hits, has been described as “the terrifying story of a little girl with a big secret.” According to the New York Telegram, the play “is solely and honestly meant to entertain…As purely purposeful diversion it ranks with ‘Dracula’ and sometimes sets your spine to as much tingling…chilling.”
The scene is a small Southern town where Colonel and Christine Penmark live with their daughter, Rhoda. Little Rhoda Penmark is the evil queen of the story. On the surface she is sweet, charming, full of old-fashioned graces, loved by her parents and admired by all her elders. But Rhoda’s mother has an uneasy feeling about her. When one of Rhoda’s schoolmates is mysteriously drowned at a picnic, Mrs. Penmark is alarmed. For the boy who was drowned was the one who had won the penmanship medal that Rhoda felt she deserved.

Aurora Rotary Youth Exchange Seeks Host Family for Incoming West Aurora Student
Aurora Rotary Noon Club is looking for our new host family as of December 15, 2012 for Meng-Ping Yang, an inbound student from Taiwan.Meng-Ping (nickname Cody) is going to West Aurora High School and needs to live in that school district. Her classes have been all determined at this point and everything is going along very well. She will be here until July 15 when she heads off to the Central States Conference.
Interested families can contact Aurora Rotary Youth Exchange officer Lane Allen, at (630) 346-4469.
What is Youth Exchange?
Each year, about 8,000 students from over 100 countries and geographical areas participate in exchanges through the Youth Exchange program. The Long-term exchange is open to students ages 15-19 and usually lasts 10-12 months while the student lives with more than one family and is required to attend school.
Host Family Wanted:
”A host family is a vital part of the cultural exchange, immersing the student in a variety of activities while in the host country. The host family plays a large role in offering the student a view of another country and gains the opportunity to learn about a new culture from a young leader. Hosting is a tremendous experience in which you can share in a young person’s hopes and dreams and develop a lifelong connection with a student and family from another country. It can be challenging to help a young person transition to a new culture and ease into the surroundings but the rewards are immeasurable. Host families in the Youth Exchange program come in all shapes and sizes. They can be Rotarians or non-Rotarians, and may include young children, older children, or no children at all. Host families are screened, interviewed, selected, and supported by their respective club or district.”
What is expected of a host family?
Hosting a student can be an extremely rewarding experience for everyone in the family, yet it is a role that requires a lot of responsibility. Host families are to meet the following expectations:
A.Before the student arrives to your home:
•Participate in training and orientation sessions offered by the club or district.
•Establish communication with the student.
•Understand the program rules that the student must follow.
•Know how to contact key Rotarians involved in Youth Exchange and community services in case of an emergency.
B.During the exchange
•Provide a safe and welcoming environment for trust and friendship to develop between the student and your family.
•Support and make the student feel like a part of the family, with the same privileges and obligations.
•Gently encourage the student to learn and adopt most of the ways of your household.
•Provide room and board for the student. All students must have their own bed. If the student must share a room, it should be with a child of the same gender and similar age.
•Provide a place in the home where the student may study in private. Recognize the student’s birthday and other special occasions.
•Ensure the student knows how to contact family members, friends, and other support networks.
•In case of an emergency, know how to access and use the student’s travel insurance policy.
•Voice any concerns and questions regarding the student to the Rotarian host counselor, including serious homesickness, difficulty adapting to family life or school, or illness.
•Maintain close contact with the host club, and address problems and concerns quickly.
•Exercise supervisory and parental responsibility to ensure the student’s well-being.
•Encourage involvement in community life by introducing the student to neighbors, friends, and local groups.
•Teach the student about the local culture, and learn about the student’s culture.
•Advise the student about matters related to school, family, community functions, and friendship.
How long will the student be living with my family?
Most long-term exchange students live with two or three host families during their exchange. This means the student may live with you for anywhere between three and six months.Lane Allen, YEO(630) 346-4469.

Dual-Credit Courses Saving West High Parents Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars
Parents of West Aurora High School students this semester are saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in future college tuition.
West Aurora leads the region in offering a remarkable 31 college-credit courses, thanks to a close relationship with Waubonsee Community College.
This fall semester, 608 West students are taking 2,297 credit hours of dual-credit classes. The tuition savings to families is considerable. If these classes were taken at Waubonsee Community College rather than West High, parents would have had to pay $97 per credit hour or approximately $223,000; at Northern Illinois University, $329 per credit hour or $757,000; at Aurora University, $590 per credit hour or $1,352,000.
Dual-credit courses are not the only way West High parents are saving considerable money on college tuition. The school also offers 17 Advanced Placement classes. If a student’s college of choice accepts the AP exam for credit, enrolled students may receive college credit for AP exam scores from 3-5.

West Aurora's Carlini Named No. 1 Senior Girl's Volleyball Recruit in the Nation (Revised)
Accolades are nothing new to Lauren Carlini, but this one took her breath away.
“I was so surprised, I started shaking. I was so stunned,” the West Aurora senior said Monday.
She was describing what it was like to learn she had been selected the No. 1 senior recruit in the nation by a panel of 100 college Division I coaches for PrepVolleyball.com’s annual Senior Aces rankings.
Starting at 100 and working its way down, the site has been announcing 10 players at a time almost daily since late August. On Monday, the top 10 were released.
“I didn’t know what was going on. I expected to be 6 or 7 maybe,” said Carlini, who verbally committed to attend the University of Wisconsin as a freshman and has competed for her country internationally.
“When I saw I was No. 1, I called my dad (Tony) and said, ‘Oh my God, check online.’ It was crazy. It’s such an honor. I definitely did not expect to be No. 1.”
West Aurora coach Kari Nicholson uses the 6-foot-2 Carlini as a setter and right side hitter to take full advantage of her all-around talents.
“That’s fantastic,” said Nicholson. “It’s a fantastic honor and I think that she completely deserves it. She’s a great kid. She’s a phenomenal volleyball player. It’s nice that she got the recognition. We’re proud of her. She’s a phenomenal volleyball player, and everybody can see that. She’s pretty to watch.”
In making the announcement, PrepVolleyball.com Editor John Tawa wrote, “Watch Carlini play and be amazed. … Her athleticism and body control shine as she flies for a ball defensively, or chases a pass down across the court. When Carlini jump sets, time seems to stand still as she delivers sweet accurate sets time and time again.”
Tawa said he projected Carlini as this year’s No. 1 when he began working on the list, but he relies on the college coaches.
“I start the process in May,” he said, noting he solicits nominations from every high school and club coach in the country. “I then send out a proposed Top 100 to the panel. We’ve been doing it every year since 2003.”
The two-time Beacon-News Player of the Year has been playing the sport competitively with Aurora’s Sports Performance Volleyball Club since she was 6.
Carlini set for the USA Youth National team in Turkey in 2011 after being named MVP of the USA High Performance Tournament in Tucson that summer.
“She does not have a single weakness on the court and her overall skill level is the highest I have seen in a junior player since (eventual four-time U.S. Olympian) Logan Tom in 1998,” said Sports Performance Director Rick Butler. “Not only is she an outstanding setter, but she is also a great point scorer as both an attacker and a blocker and her defensive and serving skills are excellent.”
Carlini also has an outstanding work ethic, wrote Tawa, “she is an absolute animal in the weight room, which makes her stand out from many other high school age players who really have not learned yet how crucial that part of the training is to their long term health and development.”
Paul Johnson contributed to this report.

Statement by District 129 School Board President Neal Ormond
Statement by District 129 School Board President Neal Ormond
The Board of Education of West Aurora School District 129 wishes to express our concern and, more importantly, our response to recent statements by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) regarding a 2010 incident involving a former District teacher, Mr. Orland, and an alleged failure to report by school personnel.
First, the Board has directed an immediate review of the allegations concerning the failure to report. Second, the Board continues to cooperate fully with DCFS and the States Attorneys Office in their review of this matter.
We understand how the DCFS allegations have triggered a significant reaction in the community and we understand how information in situations like this can become distorted and confusing. As we work through this, we trust that the community understands that while this former teacher was later found in 2011to have engaged in criminal conduct for which he was terminated, the current DCFS failure to report allegations pertain to a 2010 incident.
Please know that the Board will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure that the District is providing a safe and healthy learning environment for its students. While there are legal constraints with respect to sharing information concerning students and employees, we will continue to keep the community apprised of our efforts to the best of our ability.

A remarkable woman, she was born Barbara Joan Bishop in the Crouse-Irving Hospital in Syracuse, New York on April 23, 1928. During her lifetime, she was an outstanding educator who helped a great many young people and adults. Barbara was an inspiration to all she met. She lived life on her terms, independent to the last. Harvard Grad School to work with West Aurora SD129 to prepare students for the workforce of the future
The Illinois State Board of Education announced June 19 that Illinois is among six states to participate in the Pathways to Prosperity Network, a coalition that aims to increase the number of high school graduates who attain a postsecondary credential with value in the labor market while also leaving open the prospect of further education.
The work will initially focus on Chicago and Aurora, but the long-term goal is to create a statewide system of career pathways.
“This is about schools and businesses working together to provide greater guidance and options so our young people can make smart choices as they complete high school and move on to post-secondary education and jobs that will better support them and the Illinois economy,” said State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch. “This is a proven strategy for keeping students engaged in high school and mindful of their future.”
The Pathways to Prosperity Network is a collaboration between the Pathways to Prosperity Project at Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), Jobs for the Future (JFF) and six states: Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee. It follows HGSE’s 2011 report “Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Americans for the 21st Century,” which challenged the American education system’s emphasis and support for a four-year college degree.
The report argued students need additional pathways that combine rigorous academics with strong technical education to equip them with skills and credentials to succeed in the labor market. Both the City of Chicago District 299 and Aurora West Unit School District 129 will help lead the work in Illinois to support better career guidance and job pathways for students in their communities.
The districts will move with local community partners in education and commerce toward planning efforts to provide education and training that improves employment outcomes in their areas and throughout the state.
“We understand the important role education plays in the economic development of our communities, state and nation,” said School District 129 Superintendent Jim Rydland. ”This role includes guaranteeing that our students are prepared for the workforce of the future.”
A 2011 report by Complete College America showed that only about 37 percent of Illinois students graduate with a bachelor’s degree within four years while 61 percent of full-time students and 23 percent of part-time students in Illinois earned a college degree within six years, or by their mid-20s. Recent national studies also show that even among those under 25 who have earned a college degree, as many as half may be unemployed or, more typically, underemployed.
As part of this endeavor, the Illinois Pathways Interagency Committee - made up of six state agencies focused on education and economic development - will work with employers and educators to build career pathways systems for high school students. Each state will be led by a coalition of key public and private sector leaders committed to generating and sustaining political and financial support for the agenda and addressing legislative or regulatory barriers that inhibit progress. For more information on Illinois Pathways, visit: www.illinoisworknet.com/ilpathways
“Employers need to be heavily engaged with both educators and policymakers if we hope to put more young people to work with a credential of value,” said Jeff Mays, President of the Illinois Business Roundtable. “I truly applaud the efforts of leaders in Illinois to move this project forward.”
Earlier this year, Gov. Pat Quinn, with business and education leaders, launched Illinois Pathways, a public-private partnership to develop Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning exchanges across the state with federal Race to the Top funds. The Initiative expects to award grants later this year for the planning and implementation of eight STEM learning exchanges.
