SCHOOL DISTRICT 129 ANNOUNCES NEW SAFE-AT-HOME INITIATIVE
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shift from in-person to virtual instruction, West Aurora School District 129 will be launching a Stay Safe @ Home 129 initiative. This initiative aims to equip students and their families with strategies for safe and healthy living at home.
Providing a safe and secure environment for students and staff has always been the number one priority of School District 129. In past years, detailed safety plans for all types of school emergencies have been carefully planned and frequently practiced with staff and students throughout the school year. Since emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, School District 129 is now shifting its focus to supporting students and families while learning virtually.
The Stay Safe @ Home 129 initiative will provide families with several short public service announcements developed by the district’s student services team and health personnel. They will be shared via the district’s website and YouTube channel throughout September. Topics will include fire and tornado safety information as well as tips for preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
This initiative comes on the heels of several district-wide safety efforts including the:
- Installation of advanced cameras in schools that allow for remote access by law enforcement
- Collaboration with school and emergency management professionals through monthly Aurora-Area School Safety Meetings
- Creation of the Handle with Care Initiative intended to mitigate the effects of trauma impacting students
- Establishment of the Student Support Text Helpline for students to request support while away from school
- Coordination with local police departments and Project ChildSafe to ensure safe and responsible firearm storage
“The topic of school safety is sensitive and critically important,” stated Director of Student Services, Marti Neahring. “We are grateful for the many dedicated police, fire, and emergency management allies we have within the communities we serve. As we look to expand our definition of school safety, we recognize that it is those partnerships that have helped us and will continue to help us support the safety and well-being of our students, staff, parents, and the greater community.”
The first Stay Safe @ Home 129 public service announcement focuses on tornado safety and can be viewed below.
